After a seven-year wait, the next Gears of War installment is expected much sooner. Mike Crump, studio head at The Coalition, calls Gears of War E Day a strong foundation for the series’ future and adds that the next title will spend far less time in development than the recently released prequel.
He did not disclose the story, so it is unclear whether The Coalition is making another prequel or continuing the Gears 5 narrative.
E Day Ends a Seven-Year Hiatus
Gears 5 launched in September 2019, and it took roughly seven years for The Coalition to release the next major entry, Gears of War E Day. Several factors caused the delay: the team moved to Unreal Engine 5, rebuilt core technical systems, and readied the franchise for current-generation consoles. During that time, The Coalition also worked on other projects and supported other Xbox studios with its Unreal Engine expertise. That groundwork is intended to accelerate future development. According to Crump, E Day provides a solid technical and creative foundation for future Gears games, so many tools, workflows, and game systems won’t need to be rebuilt from scratch for the next project.
He did not name a specific year, so the comment does not guarantee a release in two or three years, only that the team aims to avoid another seven-year gap.
The most important question remains unanswered
On the content side, The Coalition has several options. Gears of War: E Day is set 14 years before the original Gears of War and shows how Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago lived through the early days of the Locust invasion.
A follow-up could expand on the early years of the war. The timeline has room for more stories without rushing to the events of the first game. At the same time, some fans have been waiting since 2019 for a sequel to Gears 5, which ended on a major decision and several unanswered questions. E Day initially pushed that narrative to the side to reunite players with Marcus and Dom. The Coalition has not yet confirmed which path it will follow, and the title of the next game remains unknown. Whether the studio will release Gears 6, another prequel, or a different project within the universe is still up for speculation.
Concerns About Possible Layoffs Persist
Crump also addressed potential job cuts. Microsoft and its gaming division are still undergoing extensive restructuring that has affected numerous studios in recent years. The Coalition head did not offer concrete assurances. Instead, he said the team must focus on what it can control. For the studio, that means shipping a game that players love. Crump also stressed the team’s deep experience, noting that several executives have worked together for more than 20 years. That continuity of knowledge is crucial to the studio.
His remarks also suggest that team stability is key to a shorter development cycle for the next title. If experienced staff leave, some of the groundwork laid by E Day could be lost. Shortly before launch, The Coalition already lost its Narrative Director, so concerns about further changes remain even after the successful launch.
A Solid Foundation Doesn’t Guarantee a Quick Sequel
Technically, The Coalition can now draw on numerous completed systems. The revamped cover system, character animations, the depiction of the Locust, and large parts of the production tools can, in principle, be reused and expanded for another game. Nevertheless, development time doesn’t depend solely on technology. Scope, story, potential personnel changes, and Microsoft’s long-term strategy can significantly impact the timeline. The question of which platforms will be supported could also play a role in the future. Gears of War E Day launched on October 6, 2026, for Xbox Series X/S and PC and is included in Game Pass. A PlayStation 5 version has not yet been announced.
Since Microsoft has released several former Xbox titles on PlayStation, a future release of Gears is still regularly discussed, though there is no official confirmation. We’ve already discussed in detail why Gears of War E Day needs to offer more than just nostalgia.
The Coalition must now build on this new foundation.
The announcement of a shorter development cycle should initially reassure many fans. After seven years without a major new installment, another break of that length would be difficult to justify. The key will be how quickly Microsoft and The Coalition establish a clear direction. Another prequel could build on the existing characters, enemies, and environments. A sequel to Gears 5 would have to revive a storyline that’s several years old while also appealing to players who joined the series with E Day. For now, the only assurance is that the next installment won’t take another seven years to arrive. The Coalition is deliberately leaving open when it will be released and what story it will tell.
