The cooperative shooter Helldivers 2 is about to receive a major technical change. Developer Arrowhead Game Studios has confirmed that the current 153 GB version of the game will be phased out on March 17, 2026. After the update, the installation size will be drastically reduced to roughly 23 GB.
The new lightweight version has already been available in beta for several weeks, allowing the developers to gather feedback before rolling out the change to all players.
Why Helldivers 2 Became So Large
Since its launch, the file size of Helldivers 2 has steadily increased. One of the main reasons was a technical solution designed to improve loading times on traditional mechanical hard drives (HDDs).

To achieve this, the game stored certain assets multiple times within the installation files. This approach helped reduce the amount of disk seeking required when loading data on slower hard drives.
However, the downside was a dramatically increased install size, eventually reaching 153 GB.
SSD Adoption Changed the Situation
According to Arrowhead Game Studios, the majority of the player base now uses solid-state drives (SSDs). Internal data suggests that around 89% of active players are already using SSD storage, while only about 11% still rely on mechanical HDDs.
Because SSDs have significantly faster read speeds, the duplicated data used to optimize HDD performance is no longer necessary for most players.
As a result, the studio decided to remove the redundant data entirely.
March 17 Update Will Remove the Large Version
In a message shared on Steam, the developers confirmed that the 153 GB version of Helldivers 2 will be removed with the March 17, 2026 update. After that date, the optimized 23 GB installation will become the standard version of the game.
Arrowhead states that the smaller version has already undergone extensive testing during its beta phase, and the team is confident that the transition will be smooth.
A Good Time for New Players
The change also arrives as Helldivers 2 recently experienced an influx of new players following the release of the “Machinery of Oppression” update.
With a drastically reduced file size, installing the game will become much easier for players with limited storage space, potentially lowering the barrier for newcomers.
