Sony Backs Down: No PS5 Price Increase – Prices Could Drop by $50 and Free PlayStation Plus Is Coming

Sony recently faced heavy criticism after reports suggested that several PlayStation products could become more expensive. Many players were already frustrated by rising gaming costs, especially with the PS5 Pro potentially reaching prices close to $900.

Now, however, Sony may be backing down.

According to an alleged internal statement, the planned price increases have reportedly been cancelled. Instead, Sony is said to be preparing actual price cuts for several products.

The company supposedly stated that it has “taken the community feedback very seriously” and wants to avoid putting additional pressure on players.

Sony Cancels Planned Price Increases

Only a few days ago, reports suggested that Sony was considering higher prices for multiple PlayStation products.

The PS5 Pro in particular sparked major backlash, as many players feared that the era of the “$500 console” was officially over.

Apparently, Sony has seen the reactions across social media, forums and comment sections.

According to the rumor, the company has now decided to completely reverse its plans.

PS5, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal Could Become Cheaper

But that may not be all.

Sony is also rumored to be preparing a general price reduction for its current hardware lineup.

According to the report, all current PlayStation consoles could become $50 cheaper.

The rumored new prices would look like this:

  • PS5 Digital Edition: $449.99 instead of $499.99
  • PS5 Console: $499.99 instead of $549.99
  • PS5 Pro: $749.99 instead of $799.99

There are also rumors that the PlayStation Portal could receive a small price cut as well.

That would mean Sony is not only cancelling the previously discussed price increases, but actually making its consoles cheaper than before.

For many players, that would easily be one of the biggest surprises of the year.

Free PlayStation Plus for Millions of Players

Sony is also rumored to be planning a compensation campaign for both existing and new users.

Long-time PlayStation Plus subscribers with an active membership could reportedly receive six months of PlayStation Plus Premium for free.

New customers who do not currently have an active subscription may still get three free months of PlayStation Plus.

Sony allegedly wants to show that it is not only listening to the community, but also offering something back in return.

Long-time users who have been subscribed since the PS4 generation – or even earlier – could benefit the most.

Community Reacts With Surprise

The rumor is already spreading quickly across social media.

Many players are surprised and cannot believe that Sony would make such a dramatic move.

Some users say they expected a smaller adjustment, but never imagined that Sony could actually lower prices.

Others are hoping that the free PlayStation Plus offer could really happen.

Whether Sony actually lowers prices and gives away PlayStation Plus remains to be seen.

Or, to put it another way: Happy April Fools’ Day 😄
