“The outcome is not predetermined”
In an interview with IGN, game director Mikael Eriksson explained that the developers genuinely do not know whether players will succeed or fail in defending Cyberstan.
“The outcome is not predetermined, so we don’t know what will happen,” Eriksson said. “Players can win and players can lose, and it’s going to be super fun to see that play out.”
He also reflected on the earlier Battle for Super Earth, which was previously the largest event in the game. Even then, Arrowhead wasn’t certain players would manage to hold the planet.
Lessons from the Battle for Super Earth
During that earlier conflict, players ultimately succeeded in defending Super Earth—an outcome that reportedly surprised even the development team. Eriksson described the experience as exciting for the studio, noting that while most of the team enjoyed watching events unfold, the pressure was highest for the game’s internal Game Master, who was responsible for overseeing the live narrative.
That same philosophy now applies to Cyberstan. Arrowhead is once again letting the community drive the story forward without knowing where it will end.

The Helldivers 2 Galactic War continues to stand out as a rare example of large-scale, player-driven storytelling. With the arrival of the cyborg threat and the launch of Machinery of Oppression, Cyberstan could become one of the most significant turning points in the game’s ongoing narrative.
