The Division 3 Is Still Alive – Ubisoft Says the Sequel Is “Shaping Up to Be a Monster”
After its official announcement in September 2023, it has been remarkably quiet around The Division 3. Nearly two years later, there are still no screenshots or gameplay reveals to analyze. However, fans have now received an important sign of life: Ubisoft has confirmed that the next entry in the looter-shooter series remains in active development and is internally seen as a major project.
The update comes directly from the development team. During the New Game+ Showcase, Julian Gerighty, executive producer of The Division 3, spoke publicly about the project’s status for the first time in quite a while.
“As Big an Impact as The Division 1”
While Gerighty avoided concrete gameplay details, his comments made it clear that development has not stalled. On the contrary, he emphasized both the scope and ambition behind the sequel:
“The Division 3 is in production. That’s not a secret. It’s shaping up to be a monster. We’re working extremely hard on something that I believe will have as big an impact as The Division 1 did.”
By drawing a direct comparison to The Division, Ubisoft is setting expectations high. The original game, released in 2016, helped define the modern online open-world shooter genre and established the franchise as a long-term pillar for the publisher.
A Shift in Focus at Massive Entertainment
Gerighty also revealed that his full attention is now on The Division 3. He previously played a key role on Star Wars Outlaws, another major project developed by Massive Entertainment. His shift in focus suggests that the sequel has entered a more intensive production phase behind the scenes.
Ubisoft’s long-term commitment to the franchise is also reflected in how it handled previous entries. While The Division was well received at launch, The Division 2 initially faced more mixed reactions. Despite that, Ubisoft continued to support and expand the game over several years, gradually improving its standing within the community.
What Comes Next for the Series?
Support for The Division 2 is not fully over yet. The previously announced “Survivors” project is still on the way and is expected by many to represent the final major content phase for the current game. Industry watchers believe this could act as a bridge, allowing Ubisoft to gradually shift attention toward The Division 3 without abruptly ending support for existing players.
At this stage, Ubisoft has not shared any official information about release timing, platforms, or core gameplay changes. Still, if Gerighty’s comments are any indication, the publisher is aiming high. The Division 3 appears positioned not just as another sequel, but as a potential reset point for the franchise and the genre as a whole.
For now, fans will have to wait for concrete details. What is clear, however, is that Massive Entertainment is working intensely behind the scenes to raise the bar once again.
