Helldivers 2 continues to dominate the co-op shooter landscape nearly a year after launch, thanks to consistent updates and strong community engagement. But Arrowhead Game Studios may be preparing its boldest shake-up yet.
Creative Director Johan Pilestedt has confirmed that the team is actively developing a roguelite mode—a new experience that could significantly reshape how players approach the game’s core loop.
A Brand-New Way to Play Helldivers 2
Pilestedt revealed the news in response to a fan on X, confirming that a roguelite concept is already in prototype form. While he didn’t go into detail, the idea opens the door to entirely new gameplay structures.
Possible interpretations of a Helldivers-style roguelite include:
- Endless enemy waves that increase in difficulty
- Randomized mission layouts or objectives
- Run-based progression, where failed attempts send players back to square one
- Strategic management of stratagems, upgrades, and resources
- Solo or co-op compatibility (still unknown)
Since this mode is still in early experimentation, it could take a while before players actually get their hands on it. But the confirmation alone has sparked major excitement across the Helldivers community.
Why This Update Could Be a Game-Changer
Helldivers 2 already has one of the strongest live-service communities of the past two years. Adding a replayable roguelite mode could:
- Bring back lapsed players
- Attract new audiences
- Extend the game’s long-term life cycle
- Offer a deeper challenge for veterans
- Introduce entirely new reward structures
With the game’s core missions already offering high-intensity co-op action, layering roguelite systems on top could dramatically expand its variety and replayability.
Arrowhead Is Also Developing a New Action IP

A roguelite mode is still far from guaranteed—prototypes don’t always survive the full development pipeline—but the fact that Arrowhead is experimenting with such a transformative idea speaks volumes about its ambition for the franchise.
If it becomes reality, Helldivers 2 could be gearing up for its biggest resurgence yet.
